1. Cayenne pepper arrived in the West from India in 1548. The
very hot chili (dried and ground to a powder) is among the
ingredients in most Mexican chili powders. The other ingredients are
paprika, cumin, cloves, marjoram and garlic powder.
2. Cayenne is also known for its healing properties. Tinctures,
ointments and powders from the fruit have been used to ease chills,
rheumatism and depression. A tea made of cayenne pepper helps reduce
the symptoms of the common cold: Mix 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper and
1 cup of boiling water, then dilute a tablespoon of this infusion
