The word "kumquat" is Chinese for "gold orange," referring to the
color of this unusual little fruit available only over the winter
months. According to the Florida Citrus Council, kumquats are known
as "the little gold gems of the citrus family" for their distinctive
taste, including a thin, sweet peel and zesty center.
While the peel and center can be eaten separately, when enjoyed
together they offer a unique sweet and sour taste unlike any other
citrus. The seeds are similar to those of an orange and should not
be eaten. The kumquat tastes best if it is gently rolled between the
fingers before being eaten, which releases the essential oils in the
rind.
