A BIRMINGHAM church was packed to the rafters for the funeral of "Mr Birmingham" Sir Richard Knowles.

It was standing room only when more than 200 family, friends and political allies and foes crammed into St Michael and All Angels Parish Church in Bartley Green yesterday to pay tribute to the former city council leader who died last week aged 90 from bladder cancer.

Politicians put their allegiances aside to pay respects to the man largely credited with the the regeneration of Birmingham in the 1980s and 1990s.

The church's vicar, the Rev Colin Mansley, told the congregation - or "comrades" as he called them - that Sir Richard was Mr Birmingham.
