LONG BEACH, Calif. -- With the U.S. Olympic swim trials wrapping
up today and the U.S. Olympic track and field trials ending next
weekend, one thing stands out as a difference-maker: drugs.
Here at the Long Beach Aquatic Center, athletes have come and gone
in parades of sharkskin suits, goggles and less hair than at a Kojak
convention -- but performance-enhancing drugs have scarcely been
mentioned.
Just up the road apiece in Sacramento, at Sacramento State's
Hornet Stadium, the topic of anabolic steroids and other performance-
enhancers has almost knocked the actual events from the docket.
