The Gwynn Park boys' basketball team was only about 30 minutes
into a fairly routine practice earlier this week, but sophomore guard
Corey Allmond was breathing hard. He later acknowledged that high
school teams fortunate enough to be playing in the state tournament
this week face two challenges: their opponents and the venues that
host the games.
Allmond and the Yellow Jackets had practiced at a college
gymnasium -- Bowie State -- and other teams had tried to do the same
to prepare for playing in the arenas being used this week. The
Maryland boys' and girls' tournaments are being held at Comcast
Center and UMBC's RAC Arena, respectively; Virginia is playing at
