The acrid whiff of family dysfunction can be detected from the
outset of Margot at the Wedding (15), when a long-haired boy, Claude
(Zane Pais), locks himself in a train lavatory in order to let loose
a long-suppressed scream. With him on the journey is his mother
Margot (Nicole Kidman, above left, with Pais), a precisely elegant
writer with a razor-sharp talent for selecting the word that will
inflict the deepest wound on those she loves the most.
Mother and son are on their way to the wedding of Margot's
sister, Pauline (Jennifer Jason Leigh). The sisters have in common a
willowy frame and long brown hair, but Margot is the more judgmental
