You wait three years for a really exciting new band to emerge
from New York, and then two come along at once. Taking to the Koko
stage, Camden at the unearthly hour of 7.30, on the bottom of an NME
awards show bill top-heavy with inferior turns, MGMT have that
faraway look that suggests their ambitions will not be comfortably
constrained by this particular venue.
The effect is accentuated by the anthemic reach of their
songwriting, which takes the monumental vacuity of Coldplay or
Razorlight, collapses it in on itself, and then invites the
survivors to dance around in the rubble. MGMT's implausibly named
singer Andrew VanWyngarden has some of the open-faced, trustworthy
allure of Richard ...
