Swimmers won't notice it, but the Great Lakes are deeper this
summer, and Lake Michigan is leading the pack with a one-foot jump.
That's good news to people in some watercraft industries -- that
is, marinas and lake shippers.
"We're up 20 percent from July of last year," said Glen Nekvasil,
spokesman for the Lake Carriers Association. Ships hauled 12.4
million tons of cargo last month.
One 635-foot vessel moving coal from a port in Lake Michigan to
one in Lake Huron gained 1,162 tons on one trip, Nekvasil said.
At the Waukegan Harbor marina, boasting 1,000 boat slips, boaters
