THERE were exchanges of hugs and thunderous cheers two weeks ago as Datuk Seri Mohamad Khir Toyo read out the Barisan Nasional's list of candidates for the general election.

Streets around Selangor Umno headquarters in Shah Alam were congested as supporters of the candidates rushed to witness the historic occasion of seeing their hopefuls being given a chance to be the next wakil rakyat.

Some of the new candidates looked nervous and some were silently uttering prayers as they waited for the arrival of Dr Khir, the State Barisan Nasional chairman.

It was not a surprise to see the new faces squirming in their seats.
