Article: New Orleans sheds light on darkened French Quarter

Katy Casbarian typically has an escort walk her the few blocks home from late-night shifts, spurred by safety considerations she said are heightened by a shadowy route through the French Quarter.

"The first four blocks of Burgundy are not very well lit," said Casbarian, Arnaud's restaurant vice president. "We've had employees who have had incidents with muggings in that area. And I live around that area and it just doesn't feel safe."

Casbarian, 2008 president of the New Orleans chapter of the Louisiana Restaurant Association, isn't alone in her assessment. She said lighting complaints are routinely brought up by restaurateurs at meetings held with city officials.
