Article: 3:52 p.m.: Big Bear Lake recognized by National Firewise Communities Program

BIG BEAR LAKE - It's been more than a century since a major wildfire struck the Big Bear Lake area.

But local officials aren't taking any chances.

Devastating blazes in nearby mountain communities in 2003 and 2007 are vivid reminders that it's only a matter of when, not if, a large fire will hit here.

The city of Big Bear Lake worked with federal, state and local agencies to complete a community wildfire protection plan in preparation for a fire disaster.

The two-year effort paid off last week when the city earned recognition from the National Firewise Communities Program.

Big Bear Lake is only the second city in the state to receive such a distinction. Beverly Hills also achieved the honor.
