He can hop. He can pose. He can do a Chippendale's striptease, if
he'd like. As long as the ball sails over the fence for another home
run, Sammy Sosa can perform his batter's-box bop and remain a
showman, a shaman and an idol of Cubdom.
But what he's rudely discovering late in baseball life is that
Sammy Love no longer is unconditional. When the ball smacks off the
top of the wall while he's primping and preening, and he delays his
dash just long enough to be thrown out at second base, Sosa becomes a
