IN the end, the most memorable line of the primary season may
belong to President Clinton. He told a church group last month:
"I've been waiting all my life to vote for an African-American
president. I've been waiting all my life to vote for a woman for
president. ... I feel like God is playing games with our heads and
our hearts." He might have added that God, or some more earthly
force, was also playing games with his party.
Hillary Clinton had barely celebrated her Code Blue victories in
Ohio, Texas and Rhode Island before worries began to appear. A
historic campaign could end up in a historic debacle.
Think back to those wonderful yesterdays -- well, yesterweeks --
