Bulbs prefer a site that receives moisture in spring but remains
dry in summer while they are dormant. They will rot in excessively
wet soil, so keep this in mind when adding bulbs to your home garden.
Hardy bulbs deserve more use in Midwest gardens. They add
versatility in color, flower form and fragrance.
With careful planning, these bulbs will flower from early spring
through autumn. Fall-flowering bulbs should be planted promptly in
the fall when purchased. Start planting spring-flowering bulbs in
mid- to late October. Make sure they are plump and firm, not dried
and shriveled. Bulbs with soft spots or excessive mold should not be
purchased.
