Once, colds and coughs were met with a stoical shrug of the shoulders and a swig of buttercup syrup, but in recent years at the first sign of a sniffle a growing number of people take to their beds convinced they are suffering from some highly contagious disease and certain they are in no fit state to work.

While most make a remarkable recovery, usually just before a doctor's note is needed, those who find themselves suffering from genuine long-term illness often find themselves being side-lined by employers who simply don't know how to help them back to work.
