Increases in taxes on beer announced in the Budget will force
more village pubs to close, an MP warned last night.
Labour's John Grogan (Selby) said the "significant" change in
duty on beer announced in the Budget would not lead to more revenue
but would hit pubs.
Chancellor Alistair Darling announced increases in duty of 4p on
a pint of beer, 3p on a litre of cider, 14p on a bottle of wine and
55p on a bottle of spirits.
Mr Grogan, who heads the All Party Beer Group, said beer duty had
been raised by 26.7 per cent in the last ten years compared to 3 per
cent for spirits, 11 per cent for cider and 16 per cent for wine.
