Outside the west door of the Christchurch Cathedral is a modern
sculpture of the Risen Christ. It was commissioned by the Anglican
Church in 2000 as a gift to the city to mark the new millennium and
the 150th anniversary of the founding of Canterbury in 1850.
One of New Zealand's leading sculptors, Terry Stringer, dressed
the Christ figure in a Maori korowai, or cloak, to indicate the
universality of the risen Christ. The experience of Christ alive is
no longer restricted to the disciples in Jerusalem or Galilee. It is
an experience for us in Aotearoa, just as it is in Alaska or Athens.
