The future of 75 council-owned farms in Staffordshire has been
secured.
Staffordshire County Council's cabinet yesterday voted to save 75
of its 121 holdings following a six-month consultation.
At least pounds1 million will also be ploughed into farms over
the next five years to encourage young people into the profession.
Farmer Graham Clay, who chairs the tenants' liaison group,
described the decision as an "overwhelming relief".
He said: "They can now look forward to a period of stability and
plan for the future again after a very stressful last few months."
Approved plans include setting starter farm sizes at 60 to 90
acres, and progression farms of 90 to 160 acres.
