I have been hearing a lot about superdelegates. What are they and what is their purpose?

Superdelegates are party leaders and elected officials who help decide the Democratic Party's presidential nominee.

All Democratic governors and members of Congress are superdelegates, as are Democratic National Committee board members and certain "distinguished party leaders," such as Tom Daschle, Al Gore and Bill Clinton.

The 794 superdelegates, who represent 20 percent of the total delegates, will vote at the party convention in Denver. The other 80 percent of the delegates are called pledged delegates because they are pledged to a certain candidate ...
