The Hawker Hunter was based on a swept-wing version of an early
naval jet - the Hawker Sea Hawk.
The early Hunter F.1 could fly for just an hour because of its
small fuel tank and risked airframe damage in combat because spent
ammunition was ejected from its four nose-mounted cannon.
On September 7, 1953, a Hawker Hunter F.3 flown by Neville Duke
broke the world air speed record, achieving 727.63 mph over
Littlehampton.
