The friend, a Belfast businessman, also had a commercial link-up with the NITB, prompting conflict of interest concerns.

The sacked senior NITB official, Philip Pentland, stressed that he declared the long-standing friendship to his superiors.

He emphasised that there was no suggestion of him receiving personal gain as a result of any perceived conflict of interest.

The details of the case were revealed for the first time today in a report to the Assembly by the Northern Ireland Audit Office.

Mr Pentland was dismissed as the board's Director of Industry Development last year over involvement in a business called HolidayMatters.com.
