DROPOUT CRISIS

Get behind solutions that have impact

AS SOMEONE who works for an organization that builds networks between nontraditional schools serving students at risk of dropping out, I join the Globe in calling for a more transparent, and more honest, measurement of high school completion ("How to lie with statistics," Editorial, March 26).

However, we need to match our ability to quantify the dropout crisis with a recognition of the existing strategies and programs that have achieved success.

The dropout crisis is a national epidemic. But too often - as will likely happen when states unvarnish their statistics - the magnitude of the problem obscures the work of effective schools.
