Lyttelton, like other ports, faces problems attracting big-
spending cruise-ship passengers.
It also faces a dilemma over whether to spend tens of millions of
dollars on a dedicated cruise berth.
Christchurch needs to take advantage of of the cruise-ship boom
with a new $30 million berth to the west of the main Lyttelton port,
shipping agent Peter Rea says.
He has been lobbying Lyttelton Port of Christchurch (LPC) to
promote the idea.
A couple of cruise ships have been diverted to Timaru because LPC
could not cope when another cruise ship was already berthed.
