Yves Saint Laurent bids adieu after 40 years

PARIS -- Yves Saint Laurent, the master designer who created undying trends such as the pantsuitand came to represent the ultimate in elegance, announced his retirement Monday and said he would close the legendary fashion house he started 40 years ago.

At a news conferenceat his Paris salon, Saint Laurent, 65, talked at length about his battles with drugs, depression and loneliness, but gave no indication those problems were the reason for his retirement.
