At some point this month, Yves Saint Laurent, who officially retired Jan. 7 with no shortage of hoopla, acquired another line for his resume. Following entries for fashion designer, art patron, costumer, bon vivant and demigod of Gaulist culture, some mention might be made of his role as a pioneer of feminism's second wave.

In the weeks since his retirement, when Saint Laurent announced that his spring 2002 haute couture collection would be his last, he has been depicted as someone who, during the 1960s, heaved a big pitchfork into patriarchy's tummy.
