"Zoot Suit Riots" returns to June 1943, when locally stationed servicemen prepping for World War II combat and members ofthe local white community turned violently on Mexican-Americans.

Writer/director/producer Joseph Tovares sets up a very complicated and tragic story that airson "American Experience" at 9 tonight on KCET/Channel 28. The rank fallout from a whitewash of a trial of a 1942 murder, targeting a gang of Mexican-American teens (the judge wouldn't allow them to groom themselves, explaining that "the boys' appearance was relevant to the case") was still hanging in the air.
