The trouble with truck traffic

HARBOR AREA: Residents complain about excessive travel times and possible health hazards from diesel emissions. Port advisory panel is giving issue top priority.

It normally takes community volunteer Eleanor Montano about 10 minutes -- tops -- to drive from her house in Wilmington to San Pedro.

Two weeks ago, the commute took 1 1/2 hours.

Heading south on the Harbor Freeway that day, Montano was trapped by long lines of huge cargo trucks jamming the freeway exits to San Pedro. The surface streets near the harbor below also appeared clogged. Montano wound up driving east over the Vincent Thomas Bridge, turning around, and then re-entering San Pedro, alreadymore ...
