Smaller San Pedro Friendship Park Nature Center to open
Nearly derailed during a six-year community battle,the Deane Dana
Friendship Park Nature Center opens Thursdayin San Pedro.
The pared-down 4,000-square-foot center will provide interpretive
displays, classrooms and an outside deck area for visitors.
Schoolchildren from throughout the region are expected to usethe
facility.
"I wish we could have gotten to this point a lot earlier," said
Supervisor Don Knabe, who was instrumental in working out a
compromise to build the center. "But once we were able to work with
the community to move it down the hill and reduce the footprint, I
think now we see something everyone is going to be happy ...
