The 1981-83 DeLorean sports car didn't have much going for it beyond its sexy flip-up doors. It wasn't a bad car, but its introduction was delayed for years, and it fell short of expectations when it arrived.

It probably would be largely forgotten if not featured in the popular "Back to the Future" movies.

The DeLorean two-seater is prominently mentioned in obituaries of flamboyant John Zachary DeLorean, who founded DeLorean Motor Cars in Northern Ireland to build the rear-engine car with a stainless steel body. It officially was called the DMC-12, but was commonly referred to as just the "DeLorean."

Detroit-born DeLorean, the son of a foundry worker, recently died after a stroke at age 80 ...
