There's no replacing the Replacements, the seminal '80s alt- rockers whose cult following thrives 12 years into post-mortem.

But former Replacements singer Paul Westerberg's new CD, "Stereo"/ "Mono," will make fans forget the void for an hour or so. The double- disc, due Tuesday on Vagrant Records, throbs with flat notes, flubbed lyrics and melodies as jagged and gristly as Westerberg's rock 'n' roll teeth.

"No effort was made to fix any of it," Westerberg said, phoning from his Minneapolis home.
