Article: ASK US; Q: Check writing

Q: Check writing

I think California passed a bill to protect people's identity and prohibited merchants from writing Social Security, credit card and driver's license numbers ona check. When I pay my phone bill in person, they ask for my driver's license for identification and then attempt to write the number on my check. I have objected to that so nowI mail the bill in. They don't require you to write the driver's license number on the check if you mail it in. I have called the company and got no help. I don't have a problem showing identification but I do have a problem when they write my identification on my check. -- BILLY MCKINZEY Hawthorne
