When Dave Altman, his wife, Marla, and their three daughters visited Europe for six weeks in the late 1970s, they had one piece of luggage that would not fit on the plane -- a recreational vehicle.

Altman, the owner of Altman's Winnebago, one of California's oldest and largest RV sales, service and rental dealerships, shipped the vehicle overseas and picked it up in Southampton, England.

"It's just the way we vacation," he said. "(My family) is still talking about that trip."

Altman, who has been in the RV business more than 30 years, has three dealerships and sells about 1,000 new and used recreational vehicles every year.
