El Segundo's fate was up in the air
LEGACY: Aerial races in 1928 at Mines Field, now LAX, put it on
the path to becoming an aerospace town.
On fields populated by gophers and jackrabbits, the aerospace
industry emerged in the 1920s and'30s and found a home in El Segundo.
The city's mild climate, flat topography and large swaths of
undeveloped land made it an appealing location for dozens of
fledgling aerospace companies.
Drawn by the national air races held in 1928 at Mines Field -- now
the Los Angeles International Airport -- many aerospace companies
chose to set down roots in El Segundo, much to the delight of Harry
