Screeners' shift a bumpy ride

LAX: Replacing private security companies' workers with a federal force has included some unforeseen logistical baggage.

Los Angeles International Airport's switch to federal screeners has been marked by a host of startup glitches, including scheduling snafus, confusion over which procedures to follow and even a shortage of uniforms, say workers and security experts.

Some screeners have had to work several weeks straight without a day off, and occasionally remain on X-ray machines many times longer than regulations call for, screeners said. In one instance last month, supervisors forgot to schedule anybody to work an evening shift at Terminal 4, sources said.
