What a difference three months makes.

As the third quarter 2004 drew to a close, most mutual fund sectors were barely hanging on to their gains for the year. But a powerful surge over the final three months of 2004 boosted funds from virtually all sectors well in the black for the year.

Among diversified equity funds, growth fund sectors regardless of size were on track to finish the quarter with gains of roughly 10 percent or more. These numbers were only slightly better than those posted by the core and value fund sectors, according to preliminary data provided by mutual fund tracker Lipper Inc.
