TUCSON, Ariz. -- It took only an instant to alter Aaron Rowand's
life and delay his coming-out party, but the Sox outfielder now
embraces the plunge off a desert cliff he took in the winter of 2002.
Rowand's descent into a dry riverbed while riding a dirt bike
widely was viewed as stupid -- and not just because he missed a turn,
sped over a ledge and dropped 20 feet onto sand and gravel. The fact
that Rowand was out there in the first place raised eyebrows because
he was well on his way to becoming an every-day major-league player.
Instead, broken ribs and a broken left shoulder blade held him
