First Federated pitch included Field's name

Marshall Field's managers are still buzzing about their new owner's initial pitch for taking over the storied Chicago department store.

The pitch, reportedly made by Federated Department Stores before it lost its first bid for Field's in June 2004, called for Field's State Street flagship to remain Marshall Field's, and for the store to become a showcase housing even more upscale boutiques and designers than it does now.

Federated lost its first bid for the 62-store Field's chain to May Department Stores Co. But now that Federated has acquired May Department Stores, including Field's, will it stick with its original plans?
