Article: Blood pressure study may change prescriptions | Heart disease top killer

The conclusions recently reached by an eight-year comparison of various medications used to treat hypertension, or high blood pressure, could have far-reaching impacts in saving money in the health-care industry, if they are put into practice.

Researchers found that diuretics, the cheapest type of drug that could be used to treat high blood pressure, are better able to prevent cardiovascular disease than some of their more expensive, more advanced pharmaceutical cousins.

The study was called ALLHAT _ Anti-hypertensive and Lipid- Lowering to Prevent Heart Attack Trial, and was sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
