Article: What's in a name? Some would like to see South-Central go

First they began sprinkling neighborhoods north of the Glenn Anderson (105) Freeway with new names _ rustic ones such as Green Meadows and stately ones such as Chesterfield Square.

Now the Los Angeles City Council has come up with another plan to reshape the identity of the city's southern flank, by eliminating the words "South-Central" from official city business.

Councilwoman Jan Perry submitted a proposal that would replace the name with the words South Los Angeles. South-Central, Perry added, has a negative connotation and is geographically inaccurate _ taking in many communities that already have a distinct identity.
