Chicago's dream of becoming "Broadway West" took a ruby-slippered
step closer to reality with the news that the seven-week touring
engagement of the megahit musical "Wicked," starting April 29 at the
Ford Center/Oriental Theatre, will be followed by an open-ended, "sit-
down" production that will run as long as the audience keeps coming,
which could be years.
The local version of "Wicked" -- the Stephen Schwartz/Winnie
Holzman musical that puts a fresh spin on characters from L. Frank
Baum's The Wizard of Oz -- will use the touring company's set and
will feature a mixture of New York and Chicago actors, with the
latter making up about 30 percent of the cast.
