Dr. Martin L. Gecht, a dermatologist, businessman and art
collector who amassed one of the world's leading collections of 19th
and early-20th century works on paper, died Jan. 4 from heart failure
at his home on the North Side. He was 84.
Born in Chicago, Dr. Gecht grew up in California, where he
attended the University of Southern California in the late 1930s. He
returned to Chicago for medical school at the Chicago Medical School.
After establishing himself as a general physician, Dr. Gecht returned
to school to study dermatology. He practiced dermatology for more
than 50 years.
In the course of his medical career, Dr. Gecht developed an
