El Segundo-based DirecTV and EchoStar Communications Corp. of Colorado are competitors in the satellite television marketplace, but they are in agreement that California should reject any plans to tax satellite TV customers.

Although no legislation to tax satellite TV viewers has been filed, the California Commission on Tax Policy in the New Economy seems poised to endorse the idea of an 8 percent tax on subscribers' monthly bills.
