Article: Immigration issues bring Leonardo the gardener to mind again

I wrote this piece about Leonardo, our longtime gardener, in 2001. With the volume of the immigration debate now at full blast, it seems worthy of a rerun.

You know Leonardo. He's the guy who drives the old pickup truck loaded with the tools of his trade -- a well-worn lawn mower, a leaf blower, an edger. He works at your house, and your neighbor's houses and all those other houses on all those other blocks.

Leonardo hails from Mexico. He understands more English than he speaks. Other than that, he's a fairly blank slate to you. You can't even guess his age. His face is weather-beaten yet boyish.

It takes Leonardo 30 minutes to do what would require you three hours of precious weekend ...
