El Segundo can play the part of a seaside small town all it wants,
but for untold thousands of people, it will always have another,
stranger reputation.
It's where the guy lost his wallet.
Out-of-towners still pose for pictures at the city's welcome
signs, to show their friends that the place really exists. Downtown
merchants still humor the occasional smart-aleck who comes in with a
quip about a missing billfold.
It's been this way for nearly 20 years, ever since an up-and-
coming hip-hop group released an odd but catchy song about a road
trip, a moment of distraction and a lost wallet. It was four minutes
of clever rhymes with a story to tell, but what sticks with people to
