Although he may never reach the stature of his famous compatriots
George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett and Oscar Wilde, the young Irish
playwright Martin McDonagh is a bright light on the contemporary
theater scene.
His most popular play, "The Beauty Queen of Leenane," which
premiered in Ireland in 1996, opened at the Little Fish Theatre in
San Pedro on April 28, directed by Ed Cotter.
The first of the playwright's Leenane trilogy (the others being "A
Skull in Connemara" and "The Lonesome West"), "Beauty Queen" bears a
slight resemblance to Beth Henley's "Crimes of the Heart" and draws
on Sam Shepard's dysfunctional family relationships.
