VICTORIA, British Columbia -- Nobody messes with Aaron Peirsol in the 200-meter backstroke. Not even Michael Phelps.

Peirsol defeated his fellow American by 2.37 seconds and extended his six-year winning streak with a world record at the Pan Pacific Championships on Saturday night.

But Phelps wasn't down for long.

About 20 minutes later, he returned to lead off the United States' 400 freestyle relay that set a world record.

In the backstroke showdown, Peirsol touched in 1 minute, 54.44 seconds -- 0.22 seconds better than the mark he set at last year's world championships in Montreal.
