Article: Don't believe everything you hear about breast cancer, experts say

Make no mistake, breast cancer is a serious disease. It will kill more than 40,000 women in this country this year, according to the American Cancer Society.

However, chances are, you fear it more than you should, especially if you believe everything you read on the Internet or hear at cocktail parties.

"The general concern of patients is that breast cancer is more lethal than it is," says Dr. Jorge Nieva, a Scripps Clinic oncologist and director of translational research for the Scripps Cancer Center in San Diego. "Although breast cancer is still a very scary diagnosis, we cure 75 to 80 percent of all breast cancers."
