When Nomar Garciaparra hobbled out of the third base dugout to
pinch-hit on the last night of the Dodgers' season, the fans shook
the stadium with what might have been the loudest cheers of the year.
Those were 50,000 voices starting the first important conversation of
this Dodgers winter.
Garciaparra began 2006 as a necessary gamble, a battle-scarred
mercenary joining his third franchise in three years, one of the
veterans hired as six-month bridges to the young stars of the
Dodgers' future.
He ended it as the surprising face of an unexpectedly satisfying
team, doing all the things that demonstrated commitment and winning
over a skeptical public.
