THE murderers of Isabella de Medici wanted to kill not just the
flamboyant, independent Renaissance princess, but to destroy her
memory as well. As Caroline Murphy points out in this excellent
biography, paintings of Isabella, as well as her writings, were
scattered, making it difficult for a researcher to recreate a
complete life.
Fortunately, Murphy did the diligent archive work required to
resurrect Cosimo de Medici's daughter and the result is a biography
of a woman, a city and a historic period, written with extraordinary
skill.
