\STLrave \STLadi History has done little to improve the reputation of Cotton Mather. Born in 1663, the Harvard educated Puritan minister was one of the church's most prolific writers, and he was widely considered a worthy heir to the long line of Mathers in the clergy.

But despite his numerous works, Cotton Mather is only remembered as the man whose investigation of alleged witchcraft in Salem led to the infamous 1692 trials that sent 19 people to the gallows for supposedly being a witch or wizard.
